Some friends over the pond at IDC released the results of a PDA survey they completely recently and the folks at DMEurope.com wrote them up for all you PDA hounds here. The survey revealed that while most 'enterprises' have
... limited intentions to purchase PDAs in 2005, suggesting that IT decision makers remain cautious in allocating funds for the purchase of non-essential hardware..BlackBerry devices are a 'best fit' solution for business users:
Despite the broad functionality and applications available on today's PDAs and smart phones, it was found to be straightforward personal information management (PIM), voice, and e-mail access that constitute the most valued applications. This insight into the application demands of business users explains the growing popularity of RIM's BlackBerry devices, which provide business users with a "best fit" solution that meets basic business requirements without overreaching in terms of functionality. The results of this survey and the AvantGo survey I mentioned a week ago show that time and again, mobile phone / PDA users only want a couple things: contact / calendar, phone, great battery life, synchronization and email. Give them those five things, put it in a small package and you've got a winner.

I too am a long-time PalmOS user -- most recently a Tungsten|C). I recently acquired a BlackBerry 7750, provided by my employer.
While I REALLY MISS some of the functionality of the PalmOS, within the context of the functionality they share in common, the BlackBerry is clearly superior.
If only the BlackBerry supported WiFi when it is in range, eBooks from eReader.com, a JPG application (for pictures of my kid) and one or two more obscure applications -- and enough memory to run them, I'd finally be willing to give up my trusty Palm.
In the end, I expect that in one or two generations, the BlackBerry will meet all of my needs!

Wondering - can I purchase any blackberry device and then make it work through my current phone company. I use the 7250 but don't really like it and would like to upgrade to another model that my provider doesn't carry.
