Blackberry for your Palm

palm tungsten w
Good news for users of wireless Palm devices: RIM announced today that they will be releasing BlackBerry Connect software for existing Palm OS-based wireless devices, like the Palm Tungsten W pictured to the left. This announcement is another adjustment of the ship that points to RIM understanding that their business is not about handsets; it's the platform. The Tungsten (not to mention the Treo) had all the features except for always-on Blackberry email plus it offered expandability, infrared, a built-in camera (in the case of the Treo) and a stylus for those that prefer point and click. In short, the only reason you'd want to carry around a Blackberry 7200 series instead of a Treo would be the push email that the Blackberry offered. No more.

I think there's at least one reason for carrying a BlackBerry rather than a Treo (I have both): The BlackBerry keyboard.

The Treo 600 keyboard is, well, usable. But the BLackBerry keyboard is much better. If you send lots of e-mail from your wireless device, especially if you tend to write long e-mails, the BlackBerry is much better for entering text.

My co-worker and I were split between the Palm and Blackberry. He purchased the Palm Treo 650 and I had a chance to view this device before deciding...

The palm has many advantages over the Blackberry 7250 but here are some major disadvantages of the Palm Treo 650: The palm is way over priced - with the rebates I got the 7250 dirt cheap from Alltel. The camera on the Palm is not too good without a flash. The worst feature of the Palm Treo 650 is the screen - with my blackberry I can veiw the screen in broad daylight, my friend can barely see his screen on the palm unless he's inside.

While the Palm Treo 650 has many features, more programs, and expandable memory and a camera, if you can't see the screen when you step outside or use the camera unless the lighting is perfect, what good is all those features?

Forgot to mention, the Palm Treo 650 is also very heavy for such a small device - you will think it is made out of lead. I think if you drop it, it's toast and will shatter into a million pieces.
